stylish, comfy cottage in the North Lakes

3 bedrooms |  6 guests  |  riverside garden

About the cottage

Recently renovated mid-terrace Georgian cottage in the beautiful North Lakes village of Caldbeck. School House has three bedrooms and sleeps 6 guests ( 4 adults and 2 children) and comes with a private riverside garden. We’ve retained many traditional features while adding modern touches to make it feel spacious and homely including superfast broadband, a log burner for cosy nights, spacious walk-in shower and full size bath for hot soaks after a day on the fells. 5 mins walk to the pub and the Cumbria Way goes right past our front door.

the school house experience

The cottage was a school in its past life run by local legend Mabel Barker: a free-spirited, progressive woman of independent means who climbed hard, smoked like a chimney and rode a motorbike. We like to think her spirit still lives on here at the School House. We hope you love staying in our home.

The cottage has many original features and is decorated to a high standard with lime plaster walls, exposed beams and Penrith sandstone fireplace. The living area has a large comfy sofa, smaller two-seat sofa and two big bean bags. The TV has Freeview, Netflix, Disney, iplayer and all major apps/channels. Broadband is super speedy - fast and powerful enough to work from home/stream movies. (We regularly work from home here ). The cottage has a log burner and central heating powered by an external oil-fired boiler. Heating is controlled by a Hive Smartphone system. The kitchen has a built in dishwasher and fridge. There's also a microwave, toaster, espresso machine, induction hob and double oven. The dining table is extendable to seat up to 8 people. The utility room has a ceiling drying rack for wet outdoor gear. Bedrooms one and two have super comfy king size beds. The third, smaller bedroom contains small but v solid bunks ( dimensions: W85cm L202cm) suitable for younger children. The spacious bathroom has a full-size bath, large walk-in Mira mixer shower with rainfall and adjustable jet shower heads and traditional victorian style basin with chrome towel rail. There is also a heated towel rail. There is a private garden that extends down to the river. Patio furniture and fire bowl/BBQ also provided. Guest access Entry to the cottage is via a bluetooth Smartlock. We will issue an access code prior to your arrival. There is one parking space situated at the front of the cottage. There is further parking available at the public carpark at the end of the road. Please only park in these two areas and not in front of our neighbours properties. The cottage is right in the heart of the village but tucked down a quieter road. The pub, shops and coffee shops are all within a few minutes walking distance. Other things to note The garden runs down to the river ( Cald beck). If you have small children please supervise them as there is direct access to the river bank from the lower garden.
